CSS and Open World Policy Center Discuss Regional Connectivity and Research Cooperation

The Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan held meeting with the Open World Policy Center in Astana during its official research visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan. The discussions focused on regional affairs, research diplomacy and expanding institutional cooperation in policy research.

The dialogue focused on emerging geopolitical developments, regional connectivity initiatives and opportunities for strengthening collaboration between the two research institutions. Experts from both sides exchanged views on the growing importance of policy-oriented research and research diplomacy in supporting informed decision-making and promoting sustainable regional cooperation.

The discussions highlighted the value of Track 1.5 diplomacy as an effective platform for complementing official diplomatic engagement through expert dialogue, academic exchange, and collaborative policy research.

A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to regional transport corridors and infrastructure connectivity, with particular emphasis on the strategic importance of the Afghan Trans Project. Participants discussed its potential to enhance trade between Central and South Asia, diversify regional transport routes, facilitate economic integration, and contribute to long-term regional prosperity.

Both sides also explored opportunities to organize joint conferences, expert roundtables, seminars and collaborative analytical studies addressing issues of shared regional interest. They expressed their commitment to maintaining regular institutional engagement and expanding research cooperation in support of regional connectivity and economic development.

The meeting reflects the Centre for Strategic Studies’ continued efforts to strengthen research diplomacy and build partnerships with leading regional think tanks to promote informed policy dialogue and practical cooperation.
